You’re in Summer

“Tell them I just got this one season to be down here on the green grass, and I praise heaven and earth that I did what I did.”
– Barbara Kingsolver, Prodigal Summer
Energy, visibility, courage, authenticity.
This is your time for energy, focus, and fruition at the height of your projects –for bringing ideas to completion and showing your work. It’s not about laying the groundwork for something new – you’ve already got enough projects on the go. It’s about finishing.
This is your opportunity to ask yourself how you can continue channeling your energy, visibility, courage, and authenticity into what it is you want to flourish.
How can you narrow your focus to make the final product happen? How can you safeguard your energy, ignoring the commitments and distractions that don’t matter, and direct it towards what really does?
Metric for living well
How can you open the door for what you love most to flourish?
Questions to ponder:
What projects can you bring to fruition?
What fears are really behind your procrastination?
What do you worry might happen if you do what you’ve always dreamed of?
What can you stop procrastinating or fiddling with and finish?
How can you show your work?
Books for summer
Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver – My all-time favourite book, about life by the mountains during a summer in bloom.
Circe by Madeleine Miller – A stunningly intricate work of fiction imagining the story of Circe, daughter of the sun-god Helios. I adored following Circe’s time alone on the island of Aiaia, honing her craft and learning to read the natural world.
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer – A true love letter to the land, combining indigenous wisdom, science’s findings on the mysteries of nature, and the teachings of plants.
Bewildered by Laura Waters – What would move you to ditch your life and take off to New Zealand for six months on a 3,000-kilometre hiking trail? For this writer, it took the implosion of a toxic relationship and a crippling bout of anxiety to find the path that would change the course of her life.
Show Your Work! by Austin Kleon – A little and beautifully visual guide to being open, generous, brave, and productive with your creative work.
Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert – Probably my favourite book on creativity. I’ve reread it countless times when I need a boost of motivation and discipline to focus on what I most want to create.
Brave Enough by Cheryl Strayed – A collection of powerful, gorgeously expressed quotes and thoughts— or mini instruction manuals for the soul – from the author of Wild.
Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernières – A book that oozes warmth and summer, weaving the story of a beautiful young woman and her two very different suitors.
Do It Scared: Finding the Courage to Face Your Fears, Overcome Adversity, and Create a Life You Love by Ruth Soukup – A kick in the butt and reminder to stop telling yourself you’re not ready.
